Request for Reasonable Accommodations

Accommodations are supports that help students with disabilities or learning differences gain equitable access to course materials, assignments, assessments, and spaces. They are individualized, based on student need and are determined via the interactive process between Center for Accessibility and Neurodiversity (CAN) staff, the student, and instructors.

If a student wants to use accommodations due to a disability or learning difference, requests for accommodations should be made through CAN via the process below rather than making arrangements directly with instructors.

The first step in the accommodation request process is completing the application for services. The link can also be found at www.ivcc.edu/can.  Using the pull-down menu in the upper left choose “Accommodations.” Directions for completing the application are on the “Accommodations” page. The application requires a student to provide basic background information as well as information about diagnosis(ses) and barriers within the academic setting.

Students must also set up an intake appointment so a CAN staff member can get to know the student, assess strengths, needs, and determine eligibility for accommodations. Please email can@ivcc.edu, call 815-224-0634, or use the CAN Bookings app to set up an appointment or ask questions about the application process.

Ideally, students will contact CAN to begin the accommodation process as soon as they have a schedule in place so supports can be in place prior to the start of a semester.  However, accommodations can be requested at any point within the school year.  It just may take up to a week or two to schedule and complete the intake process depending on student and staff availability.
